Blu-ray Review: Costs and Benefits
Just when DVD players and discs were becoming affordable, a new optical disc player came on the scene. It’s called Blu-ray (after the laser that reads and writes the data), and as with any new technology it is expensive when compared with the preceding one.
Is it worth it? The quick and easy answer is that it depends. It depends what you are using it for. There is no question that Blu-ray is a superior technology. The disc alone can carry up to five times more information than the average DVD, which means they can provide hours of special and bonus features on a single disc. They are also quite durable and do not scratch as easily as DVDs.
But any blu-ray review would be incomplete without mentioning the primary selling point — the picture quality. According to experts, Blue-ray delivers a picture that is 6 times better than the standard DVD; even if you don’t have a high-definition television the picture will be improved, dramatically. The standard resolution for a Blu-ray disc is an amazing 1080 pixels.
However, with all of these advantages, customers have not been converting to Blu-ray technology nearly as quickly as anticipated. While the primary reason may be the price, there’s more to the story than that. Fact is, Blu-ray discs will only play on Blu-ray players. And since many people now have DVD players in their homes, their cars and in their computers replacing them all would not only be extremely expensive, but it would mean replacing personal items like computers.
That is why it’s no surprise that Blu-ray makers have been drastically slashing prices on players and discs in the hope of persuading an apprehensive public into trying the new technology.
